Our lawyers:

J. Lloyd Snook III -- Mr. Snook has lived in Charlottesville most of his life.  After attending local schools, he went to Stanford University, graduating with an A.B. in Economics in 1974.  He worked as an investment analyst for two years before going to the University of Michigan School of Law.  He graduated with a J.D. cum laude in 1979, and married Sheila Haughey the day after graduation.  Mr. Snook and Ms. Haughey came to Charlottesville to practice law.  After almost five years in other firms, Mr. Snook started his own firm in 1985.  Ms. Haughey joined him in practice in 1989. 

Mr. Snook concentrates his practice in criminal law (including both state and federal cases), plaintiff's personal injury, and other civil litigation.  He has represented more than 100 people charged with murder over the years, and has taken some of those cases to the United States Supreme Court.  In 1985 and 1986, he argued two cases to the Supreme Court -- Turner v. Murray, 476 U.S. 28 (1986), and Smith v. Murray, 477 U.S. 527 (1986), winning one and losing one.

Since that time Mr. Snook has handled thousands of criminal cases.  Much of his trial work recently has been with murder cases and major federal conspiracies 

Sheila C. Haughey -- Ms. Haughey (pronounced "Hoy") grew up in Toronto and Northern New Jersey, and graduated magna cum laude from William Paterson State College in 1976 with a B.A. in Psychology. She also graduated from the University of Michigan School of Law cum laude in 1979.  She and Mr. Snook were married and then came to Charlottesville.  She worked for 8 years for the City of Charlottesville as Assitant, then Deputy, then Acting City Attorney.  She left that office in 1989 and joined Mr. Snook in private practice. She has served as President of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Bar Association, the Charlottesville Area Criminal Bar Association, and the Charlottesville Area Women's Bar Association.

Ms. Haughey concentrates her practice in the areas of criminal law, juvenile law, and family law (divorce, custody, visitation, etc.)

Bonnie J. Lepold -- Ms. Lepold grew up in New Jersey, and graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1994 and the Washington University in St. Louis Law School in 1997.  She served as a clerk for a trial judge in California, and as a prosecutor in New Jersey, before moving to Virginia to begin practice.  She has passed the bar not only in Virginia, but also in New Jersey, California and New York.

Ms. Lepold concentrates her practice in criminal law and juvenile law in Central Virginia. 

Samantha E. Freed -- Ms. Freed grew up in Maryland, and graduated from Tulane University in 2002 and the University of Maryland School of Law in 2005.  She served as a clerk for a trial judge in Maryland, and then came to Virginia.  She is a member of the Bar of both Maryland and Virginia.

Ms. Freed concentrates her practice in criminal, juvenile and domestic relations law in Central Virginia.  She was counsel for the Appellant in the recent Confrontation Clause case of Crawford v. Commonwealth, 281 Va. 84704 S.E.2d 107 (2011) in the Virginia Court of Appeals and the Virginia Supreme Court.

J. Tyler Grisham -- Mr. Grisham grew up in Mississippi and Virginia.  He graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in psychology in 2005, and he received his J.D. cum laude from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 2009.

Mr. Grisham concentrates his practice in criminal law and juvenile law in Central Virginia.
